Rebuilding Strength: Custom RX-7 Rotary Muffler Reinforcement
Every now and then, a customer project comes back through the doors that tells the story of both performance and endurance. This RX-7 rotary muffler is one of those.
A muffler that’s seen serious track time
This car has spent years out on the circuit, and the muffler has been right there for the ride. The owner had previously welded their own mounts onto the muffler to hold a heat shield in place — a smart fix at the time that kept the heat under control around the rear section of the car.
But after plenty of track use and the kind of vibration that only a rotary can deliver, those welded mounts eventually cracked and came loose. That’s where we came in.
Reinforcing it the right way
We’ve taken the muffler back into the workshop for a full reinforcement job to make sure it’ll handle the heat, vibration, and pressure for years to come. Here’s what we did:
- Added a new reinforcement plate to the body for extra strength and stability.
- Installed larger mounts to spread the load and provide more surface area.
- Upgraded the internal structure with a premium race baffle, complete with protective rings to keep the steel wool securely in place.
- Packed it with nine layers of steel wool wrap to ensure long-term durability and consistent performance under heat.
